Calgary Police launch community crime mapping website.

www.calgarypolice.ca

Starting today, Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, Calgarians will be able to learn about what kinds of incident are occurring in their community, with just a few simple clicks of a mouse.

Through this web application, members of the public are able to search specific crime types and time frames in any area, and then display the results on a map.

The crime mapping link is located on the Service’s webpage at www.calgarypolice.ca

Calgarians can search for the following offences: arson, assault, attempted murder, commercial break-in, homicide, residential break-in, robbery, sex offence, theft, theft from vehicle, vandalism and vehicle theft. Due to privacy reasons, however, only limited information about each crime will be available. Exact addresses will not be displayed.

This purpose of the application is to provide the citizens of Calgary with the knowledge about crime throughout Calgary. Through this web application, the public will be able to learn about what types of crimes have occurred within the last week to the last six months, in their communities and surrounding areas.

The Crime Mapping application compliments other online initiatives already available on the Service’s website,
www.calgarypolice.ca Calgarians are also able to report certain crimes online by using the Citizen Online Police Report System. It is important for the public to report all crimes. This allows the CPS to properly deploy resources to address issues.
